At Healing Hands, we love animals (especially cats and dogs!), which goes well with our goal of providing relaxation and improving the emotional and physical health of our clients. Pets can reduce stress and loneliness, improve heart health, and even help children with their emotional and social skills, as well as developing a better sense of responsibility and autonomy.

WHY HAVE A PET?

According to the theory of biophilia, humans develop an innate affinity for nature and all living beings. There are many studies that show the benefits experienced by people in close contact with animals. For example, in the presence of dogs and cats we release oxytocin, a hormone related to pleasure, while lowering the level of cortisol in the blood, an indicator of stress.

LIVING WITH PETS ALSO:

  • Lowers our blood pressure, improving heart health
  • Increases the levels of hormones associated with well-being and self-esteem
  • Helps us channel our emotions, a crucial part of living in happiness and good health
  • Improves our empathy and psychological health
  • Stimulates our memory, attention, and concentration (particularly important for elderly people)
  • Provides us with unlimited affection, understanding, and companionship

ADOPT OR BUY?

If you are considering having a pet, you’re probably wondering: is it better to buy or adopt? Keep in mind that in the United States alone, there are more than 6.5 million dogs and cats in animal shelters. So we strongly encourage you to lean towards the adoption option! Sites like Petfinder make it simple to search for a pet by age, gender, location, size, and breed.  Also, you’d be surprised at the number of BSR’s (Breed-Specific Rescue Groups) that exist. Adopt don’t buy!
