Why are New Year’s resolutions so popular? After all, every new day (every single moment, really) is an opportunity to start fresh.

But there’s something about the new year… it’s the end of an old cycle and the beginning of a new one. It’s a time where people reflect about what they’ve accomplished throughout the year, and what they still have to work on.

With some judgment and a tough eye, the new year is the perfect time to hit the “reset” button and take some steps towards self-improvement.

New Year's Resolutions

When it comes to making a change in your life, you first need to focus on which aspect you’d like to improve. For example:

  • Being healthier
  • Lowering stress
  • Saving money
  • Quitting an addiction
  • Career growth
  • Spending more time with family

But how to make these resolutions actually work… and last?

  1. Set SMART goals. With many actionable small steps, you can achieve large goals in the long run. Start small and plan a course of action. Don’t rush, and don’t be vague. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
  1. Develop healthy habits. Humans are “creatures of habit” so when trying to develop a new habit, it may help to pair it with an existing one. For example, if you have a few extra pounds you’d like to lose, set your tennis shoes next to the bathroom door every night when you brush your teeth, so you see them there first thing in the morning.
  1. Have a support system. Telling people what your goals are, or joining a community that is on your same path, will help keep you motivated. People who join a community with a shared common goal are more likely to succeed.

Stay focused and encouraged, no matter what your goal is…YOU GOT THIS!
