I’m sure most of us are excited for the long weekend coming up thanks to Labor Day. However, when was the last time you stopped to think about what a privilege it is to be able to even have a day off?

The origin of Labor Day stems from the Industrial Revolution and is meant to pay tribute to the contributions of American workers who, less than 100 years ago, were often expected to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week just to make a basic living. In light of that, a long weekend does seem like a bit of a privilege doesn’t it? At the turn of the last century, most laborers were looking forward to a single day of rest. But thanks to labor unions and stronger federal regulations, most of us now get two guaranteed days at the end of every week.

Some might argue that we are going through now is another historic labor revolution. With the global pandemic forever changing the way we work (now relying heavily on virtual services and information technology), the world will likely never be the same. However, while a lot of us are comfortably working from home, it’s important not to forget about those who are put in uncomfortable situations daily, and might be working almost as many hours as those original Industrial Revolution workers.

Who are they? They’re the essential employees who have kept medical centers, grocery stores, and other essential businesses open throughout the mess of a year that is 2020.

Ironically, a lot of these people won’t be getting Labor Day off. Hopefully, most will at least have shortened hours.

Regardless, we’d like to take this opportunity to formally thank all of you essential employees for keeping our world running as smoothly as possible for us this year.
