Placing drops of aromatherapy on a hand

There’s something special about a massage that is customized just for you. It’s a silent conversation between the therapist’s hands and what your body is communicating. Pain, tension, fatigue… all of it manifests differently in each person. That’s why our personalized approach is the most effective way to take care of yourself.

And when you add aromatherapy to that physical experience, something subtle but powerful happens. Essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, and lemongrass interact with our nervous system through the sense of smell. Some help to calm, others stimulate or clear the mind. This synergy between aroma and touch can deepen relaxation, help regulate sleep, and even improve mood.

Various studies, including this one from the NIH, have shown how the combination of therapeutic touch coupled with essential oils can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), help us get a better night’s sleep, and increase our overall sense of well-being. But beyond the science, there’s something that’s not always measured: the effect of truly feeling cared for.

At Healing Hands, three kinds of aromatherapy are included to complement each massage:

  • Lavender: applied at the beginning of the session, taking slow, deep breaths of the calming properties of lavender help your mind and body shift into relaxation mode to fully enjoy your massage.
  • Eucalyptus: ever wonder why you are always stuffy when your massage therapist asks you to turn face up? Gravity causes fluids to accumulate in our nasal passages while laying prone. Breathing eucalyptus (through the nose, if possible) not only clears our sinuses but also helps clear the mind.
  • Peppermint: the saddest part of the massage is when it’s over! But taking deep breaths of peppermint helps you sooth any lingering muscle aches or joint pain. It also invigorates you as you transition back to “real life”.

So the next time you come in for a massage at Healing Hands, remember that when the therapist invites you to take a deep breath of an essential oil, consider it an invitation to slow down, pay attention to your body, and allow yourself a mindful pause. Not to “fix” anything, but to simply be present. Because sometimes, a good massage with the right aroma not only relaxes the muscles, it also clears the mind. Book today!
